Fantastic Zoology [CF:510-07690]

These three pieces were written for Bengamin Binder's "Carnaval Nouveau" project for which a diverse group of composers were asked to write pieces corresponding to movements in Schumann's Carnaval. This set contains the three movements I wrote for that project, and all three pieces are intended to be played together. The titles of the corresponding movements are given as subtitles after each piece. However, rather than rewriting these pieces, I tried to re-imagine them as Borges did the medieval movement in Carnaval, and then allowed a new piece to grow out of it. In his preface to the Anthology of Fantastic Zoology, "We do not know what the dragon means, just as we do not know the meaning of the universe, but there is something in the iimage of the dragon that is congenial to man's imagination, and thus the dragon arises...". -Joshua Fineberg
