Handel s Water Music was written to entertain King George I and his court on a boating tripThe first suite had nine movements, which are all included in this volume: the overture, a beautiful Adagio for oboe and strings, some striking horn writing in the third and fourth movements (the middle section of the 3rd movement shares the theme of the Larghetto of the oboe sonata opus 1 no. 5 in G minor, showing that sections of the longer movements can be played by themselves), the famous Air, for strings only, three dances for full orchestra - Minuet, Bouree and Hornpipe; followed by the Fugue, for oboes and strings.
