Born in Portland, Oregon (USA) in 1952, John Van Buren studied composition with Milko Kelemen at the Stuttgart Conservatory. Just one year after completing his studies (1980) he won the composition prize awarded by the city of Stuttgart. This was followed by grants from the Heinrich-Strobel Foundation (1984) and the Arts Foundation of Baden- Wurttemberg (1991). He has been a lecturer for composition and music theory and also head of the Studio for New Music at the Augsburg Conservatory since 1992.
