Jan (also known as Johann) Dismas Zelenka was born in Lounovice (a small town southeast of Prague in what was then Bohemia), and died in Dresden in 1745. He played the Violone, the largest (and most deeply-ranged member of the Viol family, analogous to the modern- day Contrabass. As a composer, Zelenka is known for his adventurousness, great harmonic invention, and mastery of counterpoint.
