Miniaturen: 8 Stücke für Klavier -- "Dear piano-lovers, It gives me great pleasure to present to you a small selection of my compositions. During the many years in which I have been active as a piano teacher, I have regularly attempted to expand the repertoire of my students with entirely new, original pieces. The eight compositions in this collection are miniatures composed in various styles and with varying degrees of difficulty. They include a romantic piece for the advanced student ('Air in the Old Style'), a jazz piece ('Ragtime'), and a study ('Three on Two'). In addition to compositions for younger children ('Lullaby') there are pieces more suitable for adult players ('In the Evening'), though most of them will prove suitable both for younger students of the piano and for adult piano-lovers ('Waltz', 'Melody', 'In the Morning'). Despite the difference between them, these compositions have one thing in common: each is based on a melody that is easy to recall and hum or sing. Let me therefore conclude this brief introduction by hoping that you experience no great difficulties when practicing and the more pleasure when playing. Have fun!" (Leonid Gilman).
Born to Russian Jewish parents in Moscow in 1948, Leonid Gilman began to play the piano at the age of 5, and was trained as a pianist and later as a musicologist. These studies took him to the Central School of Music for Gifted Children and the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow and were followed by advanced musicological studies in the same city. Between 1972 and 1990, Gilman taught at a Moscow conservatory and on the music education faculty of a university. Since 1990 he has lived in Germany, where he runs a private school of music and teaches piano, composition, and aural training. He also composes - primarily for the piano, his favorite instrument. His compositions are much respected and have been premiered in Munich, Hanover, Enschede (Holland), and elsewhere. Leonid Gilman is also a passionately keen graphic artist. His drawings, in most cases on musical themes, hang in a number of schools of music and private homes in Germany, Austria, and Spain.
