The 2023 edition of Music by Black Composers (MBC) Violin Volume 1 is split into books 1a and 1b. Together, they contain 22 beginner and elementary level pieces written by both men and women. The composers come from North America (the USA), South America (Brazil), the Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico), Europe (England, France, Switzerland), and Africa (Ghana, Nigeria), and the repertoire spans four centuries – from the 1700s to the present.

In addition to the music, the book also contains illustrated composer biographies, features on Black classical music making throughout history, and profiles of Black role models in classical music past and present. Each piece in Volume 1 has both a second violin accompaniment (included in the solo violin books) and a piano accompaniment (in a folio sold separately). Supplemental audio, video, and informational resources are also available through the links below.

Designed to supplement the current instrumental training methods, MBC Violin Volume 1 provides students of all races and ethnicities a broader perspective on who has written classical music throughout history and today.
