Lassus Passan Vostri Triomphi first appeared in Le Roy + Ballard s Continuation des Mellange (Paris,1584), but it was subsequently included in several anthologies, including Angelo Gardane s Dialoghi Musicali de diversi eccellentissimi autori (Venice, 1592), the source for the present edition. The text, originally by Petrarch, speaks of the ultimate emptiness of all earthly pomp and circumstance, and describes how implacable Time interrupts all mundane preoccupations, and in the end, turns us to dust. The strong imagery of the text inspired Lassus to produce a piece of rich sonority, which works equally well vocally as instrumentally- cornetts and sackbuts seem to suit the piece best, but other instruments can be used successfully.
