Andrei Mikhaylovich Volkonsky was born in exile in Geneva on February 14, 1933. As a child he played his improvisations to Serge Rachmaninov, later studying piano with Dinu Lipatti and composition with Nadia Boulanger. His family resettled in Moscow in 1947. He emigrated to Geneva in 1972, and later settled in Aix-en-Provence in the South of France; Voklonsky died there on September 16th, 2008.
