Johann Joseph Fux was born in Hirtenfeld in Styria (Austria) in 1660. He is most famous as the author of "Gradus ad Parnassum" ("Ascent to Mount Parnassus"), a treatise on counterpoint, but he was also a prolific composer of instrumental and church music. Fux died in Hirtenfeld, Styria (Austria), on February 13th, 1741.
