Johann Christian Bach, the youngest of J.S. Bach's sons, composed in the "gallant aesthetic," a style incorporating balanced phrases, emphasis on melody and accompaniment, and not too much contrapuntal complexity. The gallant movement avoided the intricate lines of Baroque music, focusing instead on fluid melodies in periodic phrases. His quartet for oboe and strings is one of his most popular pieces (it is part of almost every oboist's repertoire), and lends itself beautifully to this setting for SATB saxophone quartet.
