Ferdinand Ries (baptized in Bonn, Germany, on November 28th, 1784) was a friend and pupil of Ludwig van Beethoven (he also worked for him as secretary and copyist). In 1838 he published a collection of reminiscences of his friend and teacher, co-written with Franz Wegeler. As a composer, his works include eight symphonies, a violin concerto, nine piano concerti, and numerous other works in many genres, including twenty-six string quartets. He concertized throughout Europe, and lived in Vienna, Paris, and London, before settling in Frankfurt in 1824. Ries died there, on January 13th, 1838. died there, on January 13th, 1838.
