Johan Georg Lickl was born in Korneuburg, Austria, and orphaned as a child. He studied under Witzig, the organist of the church of Korneuburg, until he moved to Vienna in 1785, where he studied under Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Joseph Haydn. Later in the 1780s, he became organist at Carmelite church in Leopoldstadt, and collaborated with Emanual Schikaneder (famous as the librettist of Mozart's The Magic Flute, in which opera he also portrayed Papageno, as well as being the builder of the Theater an der Wien) on a number of Singspiele in the 1790s, working in Theater an der Wieden. A large portion of output consists of sacred music, including masses and requiems. He also wrote operas, three string quintets, and the present wind quintet. Johann Georg Lickl died on May 12th, 1843.
