2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 B-flat clarinets (1st doubling E-flat clarinet, 2nd doubling bass clarinet), 2 bassoons (2nd doubling contrabassoon), 2 horns in F, 2 trumpets in C, 2 trombones (2nd with F attachment), 2 percussion players*, celesta, strings, I: vibraphone (plus bow), xylophone, chimes, tam-tam, 3 suspended cymbals (low, medium-low, high, may be shared with II), 1 low tom-tom (best shared with II), glockenspiel (shared with II)., II. 4 timpani*, crotales (2 octaves), 6 drums (arranged low to high, 4 tom-toms and 2 bongs are suggested, lowest may be shared with I), vibraslap, 4 suspended cymbals (arranged from low to high, to b, e shared with I), glockenspiel (shared with I)., *The percussion parts have been scored to enable the 2nd percussionst to play the timpani part. Three players would be needed if the timpani part is to be played by a separate player.
