Joseph Leopold Eybler was born on February 8, 1765,in Schwechat near Vienna. He was a friend and distant cousin of Haydn, who was his patron; also a life-long friend of Mozart. After Mozart's death, it was Eybler Constanze Mozart first asked to complete the Requiem. It was when he proved unable to complete the commission (it has been conjectured that he may have felt unequal to the task on account of his great respect for Mozart and his music) that she turned to Suessmayr. Eybler died on July 24, 1846, in Vienna.
