Antonio Salieri was born in Lagnano, Italy, on August 18, 1750, into a family of prosperous merchants. He studied violin and harpsichord with his brother Francesco, who had been a student of Giuseppe Tartini. After the death of his parents, Salieri moved to Padua, and then to Venice, where he met Florian Leopold Gassmann in 1766. The latter invited him to attend the court of Vienna, where Salieri remained for the rest of his life, rising to the position of of Royal and Imperial Kapellmeister in 1788, which post he held until 1824. He died on May 7, 1825. Salieri was teacher to many famous composers, including Beethoven, Czerny, Hummel, Liszt, Meyerbeer, Moscheles, Schubert, and Suessmayr. He also taught Mozart's younger son, Franz Xaver.
