Romance for Violin and Piano.
Wilhelmj, August.

Violin & Piano.
For: Vln-Pf.

August Wilhelmj was born in Usingen (Taunus) in 1845. At a surprisingly early age he developed into an eminent violin virtuoso. It was on Franz Liszt's recommendation that he received a complete musical education at the Leipzig conservatory between 1861 and 1864. During this time he also appeared at the Gewandhaus. He met Richard Wagner in 1862 and immediately became a passionate follower; he was concert master of The Ring of the Nibelung in its premiere at Bayreuth. He had an extensive solo career, touring in Europe and overseas. Wilhelmj received the title of Royal Professor in 1871. He started his own violin school in Biebrich am Rhein. From 1886 to 1893 he taught in Dresden- Blasewitz. In 1894 he went to London to teach at the Guildhall Music School, and he died there in 1908. Wilhelmj's compositions were of the new German direction, a style led by Franz Liszt and known as the Viennese classical period. This romance was written for violin and orchestra, and appeared for the first time in 1872.
