Alessandro Scarlatti is considered the first great master of the Neapolitan operatic school. He was born in Palermo in 1659 and is known to have studied in Rome from 1672. From 1680 to 1684 he was Court Conductor to the former Swedish Queen Christine who was spending the evening of her life in Rome. Probably Arcangelo Corelli had an important influence on the 23 year old conductor at this period. Corelli was leader of the band which Scarlatti conducted. As early as 1679 Scarlatti had made his mark in Rome with his first opera "Gli equivoci nel sembiante" and further performances took place in Bologna, Vienna and Ravenna.Scarlatti gave the chamber music repertory about 600 solo cantatas and also sonatas for various instruments with thorough bass, including the present work. In his old age he also turned his attention to keyboard music and composed numerous Toccatas which prepared the way for the works of his son Domenico Scarlatti. His style is merked by extended melodies and skilful composition at times reminiscent of J. S. Bach, Hasse, Quanta and Tartini were among his important pupils.
