Schattenland (Shade Country).
Leufgen, Friedrich.

Flute/Piccolo (Solo).
For: Fl.

This enjoyable and challenging piece would make an excellent addition to a recital program for an advanced student. It serves well as an introduction to extended techniques without the addition of some of the complex musical ideas one often encounters in contemporary music, and is rewarding to play.--Carla Rees, for The Flutist Quarterly (Spring 2009).
Friedrich Leufgen was born in Pruem (Eifel mountain range) in 1958. ''Schattenland'' by Friedrich Leufgen is a very inspiring piece. Unfamiliar sounds, such as flutter-tonguing, simultaneous singing and playing, key-rattling, and harmonics, endow the composition with a great wealth of tone colors. This produces moments of grief, anger, and melancholy. 'Schattenland' is very suitable for advanced pupils and students and is a valuable addition to the repertoire for 'Jugend Musiziert' (a competition for young musicians in Germany)' (Christina Singer, Flautist with the South West German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart).
