Giovanni Simone Mayr was born in 1763, near Ingolstadt Ingolstadt, Germany, as Johannes Simon Mayr. He lived most of his life in Italy, however, and so he is considered really to have been Italian. Rossini dubbed him the 'philosopher' composer, since he was extremely particular never to set to music any sacred or opera text that did not comply with his ideas or beliefs. Giovanni Simone Mayr died in 1845, in Bergamo.
