Cesar Antonovich Cui was born in Vilnius (the capital of Lithuania) on January 6, 1835; he was a Russian of Lithuanian and French descent. Professionally, Cui was an army officer and teacher of fortifications, but in his avocational life he was a composer and music critic. It was in this 'sideline' that he became a member of The Five (the famous group of Russian composers led by Balakirev, dedicated to the promulgation of particularly Russian music). He died on March 13, 1918, and was buried in the Smolensk Lutheran Cemetery in Saint Petersburg; but in 1939 he was reinterred in Tikhvan Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Saint Petersburg, to lie beside the other members of The Five.
