Lou Silver Harrison was born in Portland, Oregon, on May 14th, 1917. He and his family lived in a number of locations in the San Francisco Bay area in his early years before he moved to San Francisco proper in 1934. In 1943, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a music critic for the Herald Tribune, and met and became friends with Charles Ives. He taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, San Jose State University, and Mills College, settling eventually in Aptos, California with his life partner, Bill Colvig (they met in 1967). Lou Harrison died on February 2nd, 2003.
