James Matheson.
Commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic, True South captures the James Matheson’s fascination with reinterpreting traditional harmony and rhythm. Energetic, colorful, and grounded by underlying lyricism, the work transcends its scoring for chamber orchestra with textures that are sonorous, and evocative. True South’s loosely structured set of variations flows through moments of brightness and darkness, sparseness and density, motion and stillness. The work’s title evokes an inverted globe, presenting an opportunity for examining our preconceptions about the world, its politics and inhabitants.
